Hands Springbok Seven’s Jersey Over to Team
As the first round of the 2017/2018 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series came to an end, Gavin Varejes was thrilled with South Africa’s victory. For the second year running, the BlitzBokke won the first round of the tournament by scoring 24-12 against New Zealand, leaving rugby enthusiasts so excited about the upcoming round two that tickets were sold out in a flash – even quicker than what the Justin Bieber and U2 shows were sold out! Along with all this exhilaration, another special event took place - the handing over of the Springbok Sevens jersey to the Blitzbokke team.
Keeping the SA Flag Flying High
President of the South Africa Rugby Legends Association (SARLA) and well-known philanthropist Gavin Verejes, together with rugby icon and CEO of SARLA, Stefan Terblanche, were chosen to do the handover. According to Varejes, the Springbok Sevens team have made remarkable achievements at the tournament, and deserve the high level of pride felt by South African rugby supporters. Known as the team to beat, the Blitzbokke have set a precedent for other teams to aspire to. The philanthropist believes that rugby and other sports have the power to unify the nation, and is helping to keep the country’s flag flying high. Varejes felt honoured that he was asked to hand over the jerseys. Springbok Sevens Coach Neil Powell spoke with pride about both Varejes and Terblanche.
Gavin Varejes Touches Lives
According to Powell, Varejes enriches the lives of many people on many levels. He has not only invested hundreds of millions into local and international rugby, without expecting any credit, he is deeply committed to promoting rugby as a tool for social upliftment. Powell also spoke highly of Terblanche, who is a humble and yet legendary international rugby icon, who has played more first class and international games than most professional players. He expressed gratitude to both Varejes and Terblanche for agreeing to hand over the jerseys and their contribution to the sport, and said that he is proud to be associated with both of them.
