Springboks Receive Jerseys from Gavin Varajes Before Playing the Baa-Baas
Gavin Varejes was once again on hand to present the Springboks with their jerseys in the build up to their match against the Barbarians at Wembley. This is the second time Mr. Varejes has been honoured with this role, a tradition that carries a lot of pride and importance for the esteemed national rugby team. With the concept that Springbok jerseys are earned and not given, it has become tradition to invite high profile individuals like Gavin Varejes to present players their jerseys in a pre-match ceremony. A spokesman for the Springboks commented that “Gavin is a very passionate Springbok supporter and we value his tremendous contribution to the team.”
The South African Springboks
The Springboks are the South African national rugby team. The team logo, which is embroidered on the right side of their green jerseys, includes an image of a Springbok and a wreath of Protea flowers that was added to the logo in 1992. This image and the Springbok name have become an iconic part of the national culture.
The Springboks have a proud and distinguished history in international rugby. They have represented South Africa since 1891 and they have won the Rugby World Cup on two separate occasions. The most memorable moment in South African sports history was their 1995 World Cup victory over New Zealand in the final, which was played at home on South African soil. The win was significant in so many ways, most importantly for bringing together a nation in the post-apartheid era. The enthusiasm around this game was led by the team’s number one supporter Nelson Mandela who clearly saw the great potential this specific match carried.
The Springboks play in an annual tournament between Australia, New Zealand and Argentina called the Rugby Championship, while they also tour and host Northern Hemisphere nations. In the 2016 season, which includes touring Europe for matches in England, Italy and Wales, South Africa hosted Ireland in a three test match series which they won 2-1.
