The previous Richmark Holdings golf day happened at Randpark Golf Club on 15 October 2015 and had celebrity sports icons like James Small, Shaun Bartlett, Wayne Fyvie and Clive Eksteen join players for a four ball game. The golf games were followed by a charity dinner and auction. The following year’s event was not celebrity driven but turned out just as entertaining and successful.

The charities were The Kirsty Watts Foundation, and Joint Aid Management, also known as JAM. Richmark Holdings and Gavin Varejes are proud to back these charities.

Joint Aid Management is a South African based charity with a continent wide reach. This Christian humanitarian fund is a development organisation with over 25 years of charitable work and development. Beginning in 1984, JAM founder Peter Pretorius established the organisation after a particularly harrowing experience in Mozambique. Stranded without food supplies for 10 days at a food centre in Pambarra, Peter bore witness to the suffering of 34,000 people. With more than 30 people per day dying of hunger, Peter was moved to help as many people as possible. 25 years later, JAM helps hundreds of thousands of people every single day across the continent of Africa.
Active in Angola, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan and Zimbabwe, JAM’s programs focus on highly nutritional feeding, school feeding and assistance to those in need. Water and sanitation are also central to the services provided, along with various HIV programs. JAM also provides community training in agriculture and small business, enabling those it helps to become self sufficient
It’s with JAM that Gavin Varejes has partnered. As the founder of the South African Rugby Legends Association, Gavin Varejes is a well-known South African philanthropist who has used his passion for sport as an outlet for his charities. Founded in partnership with John Allen, former Springbok rugby and Sharks hooker, SARLA coordinates and promotes amateur rugby matches with well-known players in an effort to raise money for various charity groups.
In partnership with JAM, SARLA will provide feeding programs at its rugby clinics that it conducts in underprivileged areas. With many children only getting one meal a day, the scheme appealed to Gavin Varejes and SARLA, who will now be working together to bring more than just rugby to the communities they conduct their clinics in.
