James Ribbink, an eight year old junior surfing champion from Durban, is to be sponsored by Richmark Holdings, a business investment company based in Johannesburg.
Recently, James has been successful in a number of junior surfing events, most notably at the Billiaboing Grom Games and the RVCA Junior event held in J-Bay, where he finished 1st in the Under 10 age group. It is because of James’s excellent performances at these events that have helped to catapult him into the surfing spotlight in South Africa. Many people involved in the sport claim that James has a bright future with some commentators stating he has the potential to become a champion at the senior level.
The sponsorship agreement between Richmark Holdings and James Ribbink is the latest of a number of similar agreements James has with some of the leading organisations from the sport of surfing and beyond.
Richmark Holdings specialises in investing in young entrepreneurs and businesses to eventually help them become successful industry leaders. By supporting James, Richmark Holdings is able to maintain its commitment to helping some of South Africa’s brightest and most talented young people, be it from the world of business or sport.
At first it was James’ natural talent on his surfboard that brought him to the attention of Gavin Varejes who founded Richmark Holdings in 2000. Gavin himself is from Durban and has been involved in the sport of surfing in one form or another for more than thirty years. After getting to know James, Gavin was taken aback by his positive, humble and respectful attitude, which is hugely refreshing for someone so young. It is because of James’s attitude and his ability to keep his feet on the ground that Varejes was only too happy to support the youngster through his company, Richmark Holdings.
Gavin Varejes is the CEO of Richmark Holdings LTD and the President of SARLA (South African Rugby Legends association)
